Wild boar in towns and forests: how to avoid dangerous encounters

Wild boar can now be seen not only in forests but also in the suburbs of many European cities, from Berlin to Barcelona. They are drawn by easy food: rubbish, compost and people feeding them.
A wild boar usually runs from people. It can be dangerous when defending its young, when injured or when it feels cornered.
Do not attract wild boar
- Do not feed wild boar, not even bread.
- Close your bins and do not put bags out in the evening.
- Keep your compost bin closed.
- Check the bottom of your garden fence, because boar can dig under it.
Walking your dog
- In the evening and near forests, keep your dog on a lead. A dog chasing boar can be badly hurt, and a fleeing boar can run into people.
Spring is the season of young
- From spring, sows lead striped piglets and defend them very firmly. If you see young ones, walk calmly away and leave the animals a way to escape.
On the road
- Wild boar often cross roads at dusk and at night. Slow down at wildlife warning signs. After hitting an animal, make the scene safe and call the police.
Checklist
- No feeding
- Bins and compost closed
- A secure fence
- Dog on a lead in the evening
- Slower at dusk near forests
