Choking: how to prevent it in children and adults

⏱ 2 min read
Cutting food, toys, batteries. A guide based on official advice. The same text is in the free SurvivalZone.app and works without internet.
Young children explore the world with their mouths, and their airways are very narrow. A grape, a piece of sausage or a small part of a toy can block them completely. In adults, choking happens most often when eating fast, talking while eating or after alcohol.
The good news: most choking can be prevented.
Food for young children
- Cut grapes, cherry tomatoes and blueberries lengthways into quarters.
- Cut sausages lengthways into thin strips, not into rounds.
- Do not give whole nuts to young children.
- Hard sweets, popcorn and chewing gum are not for young children.
- Children eat sitting down and supervised, not running around or in the car.
Toys and small objects
- Check the age labels on toys. Keep small magnets, button batteries, coins and older siblings' toy parts out of reach of young children. A swallowed button battery is especially dangerous: go to A&E at once.
Adults and older people
- Eat slowly and chew well. Older people, people with dentures and people with swallowing problems should eat with someone nearby. If swallowing is difficult, talk to a doctor.
Practise first aid
- Back blows and abdominal thrusts are done differently for babies, children and adults. It is best to learn them on a course with a manikin. You also have step-by-step instructions in SurvivalZone.app, even without internet.

Frequently asked questions
How should I cut grapes for a toddler?
Lengthways, into quarters. Round, slippery pieces easily block the airway.
When can children eat nuts?
Do not give whole nuts to young children. Ground nuts or nut butter are safer. Ask your paediatrician.
What should I do if a child swallows a button battery?
Go to A&E at once or call 112. A battery can seriously damage the oesophagus within a short time.
