Gas at home: shut-off valve, annual check and alarms

Gas at home: a safe installation: a practical guide

⏱ 2 min read

Shut-off valve, annual check, ventilation, alarms. A guide based on official advice. The same text is in the free SurvivalZone.app and works without internet.

Gas leaks are rare, but when one happens seconds and a calm head count. The key things can be prepared in advance.

Natural gas is given a smell so you can notice a leak. Report even a faint smell.

Know where to turn off the gas

  1. Find the valve at the gas meter and the valve at the cooker or boiler. Show them to everyone at home.
  2. Make sure the meter is easy to reach and nothing blocks it.

Annual check and ventilation

  1. Have your gas installation and appliances checked once a year by a qualified engineer.
  2. Do not cover air vents in doors and walls. Burning gas needs plenty of fresh air.
  3. Use gas appliances as the manual says.

Alarms

  1. Consider a gas alarm in the kitchen or boiler room.
  2. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm: CO has no smell to warn you.

If you smell gas

  1. Do not touch switches or flames, turn off the gas, open the windows, leave the building and call the gas emergency number from outside. See the scenario You smell gas.

Checklist

  1. I know where the gas valves are
  2. Gas meter easy to reach
  3. Installation checked this year
  4. Air vents uncovered
  5. Carbon monoxide alarm
  6. Gas emergency number saved
