Tornadoes in Europe: where to shelter at home and how to prepare

Many people think tornadoes are an American problem. In fact Europe has hundreds of tornadoes every year, usually in summer during violent storms. They are short and local, but can tear off roofs and knock down trees.
Warnings usually come at the last minute, so you need to choose your shelter in advance.
The safest place at home
- A cellar is best. If you have none, choose a room on the lowest floor, in the middle of the building, with no windows, such as a bathroom, pantry or hallway. The more walls between you and the outside, the better.
What to prepare
- A torch, power bank and radio in your chosen place.
- A bike or ski helmet for everyone, to protect heads from debris.
- Shoes with firm soles, because afterwards there is glass everywhere.
- Weather warnings and emergency alerts on your phone.
Recognise the danger
- A dark, rotating cloud, a funnel reaching down to the ground, a sudden calm after a storm, or a loud, growing roar like a train are signs to go to your shelter at once.
Outdoors and in the car
- Cars and caravans do not protect against a tornado. If you are on a campsite or in a summer house, move to a solid building when a severe storm warning is issued.
