Heavy rain and flash flooding: how to protect your basement, garage and property

Protect your basement from flash floods: a practical guide

⏱ 2 min read

Non-return valve, gutters, garage, insurance. A guide based on official advice. The same text is in the free SurvivalZone.app and works without internet.

A sudden downpour can drop as much rain in an hour as normally falls in several weeks. Drains cannot cope, water backs up into basements and floods underground car parks and underpasses.

This affects people who live far from rivers and have never thought about flooding.

Protect your home

  1. A non-return valve on the drains stops sewage backing up into the basement.
  2. Clear gutters, drains and gullies outside the house.
  3. Ground sloping away from the walls, not towards them.
  4. Sandbags or flood barriers for basement and garage entrances if water has come in before.

What to keep higher up

  1. In the basement and garage, keep things on shelves, not on the floor. Documents, photos and electronics should not be stored low down. Secure chemicals and fuel so water cannot spread them.

Underground garages and cars

  1. When heavy rain is forecast, drive your car out of an underground garage or a place where water collects. Never go into a garage or basement that is flooding fast: you may not get out in time, and there is a risk of electric shock.

Warnings and insurance

  1. Heavy rain warnings come from your national weather service, and the most serious ones as emergency alerts on your phone. Check whether your insurance covers flooding from rain and sewer backflow, because that is not always the same as river flooding.

  3. Basement items on shelves
  4. Documents and electronics higher up
