Bears in Europe’s mountains: how to avoid an encounter on the trail

⏱ 2 min read
Trail, noise, food, notices. A guide based on official advice. The same text is in the free SurvivalZone.app and works without internet.
Brown bears live in the Carpathians, the Tatras, the Balkans, Scandinavia and parts of the Alps and Pyrenees. Encounters are becoming more frequent, because bears get used to food left by people.
A bear usually avoids people. The best way to stay safe is for the bear to hear you before it sees you.
On the trail
- Stay on marked trails and walk in daylight. At dawn and dusk animals are most active.
- Talk in a normal voice, especially in thick forest and by noisy streams.
- Keep your dog on a lead. A loose dog can provoke a bear and lead it back to you.
- If you see cubs, calmly back away at once. Their mother is nearby.
Food
- Never feed bears and never leave food scraps or rubbish. A bear that learns people mean food becomes dangerous. When camping, keep food in sealed containers away from the tent.
Check local notices
- National parks and forestry services report bear activity and sometimes close trails. Check before you set off.
Remember
- If a bear notices you: do not run, talk calmly and back away slowly. Detailed instructions are in SurvivalZone.app.
