Wild boar encounter: how to stay safe (forest, town, road)

⏱ 2 min read
A wild boar in the forest, street or garden. Below: what to do right away, what next, when to call 112 and what to avoid. The same instructions are in the free SurvivalZone.app and work without internet.
First, right now
- Stop and don't approach. Keep at least several tens of metres away.
- Leave the boar a way out. Never corner it against a fence or in a stairwell.
- Slowly back away, without running or shouting.
Then
- Take extra care in spring around a sow with piglets. She may attack to protect them.
- Put your dog on a short lead and pull it away. Boars can attack dogs.
- If a boar runs towards you, climb onto something: a bench, wall or car, or get behind a tree.
- In towns, don't approach or feed it. Report it to the police or the local council.
- When driving, slow down at wildlife signs. If a boar runs onto the road, brake hard and hold the wheel straight; don't swerve.
- After hitting a boar, switch on hazard lights, set up the warning triangle and call the police. Don't touch the injured animal.
When to call 112
A boar has injured someone or attacked a child, or it is standing on a busy road and could cause a crash.
What not to do
- Never feed wild boar. It makes them lose their fear of people.
- Don't leave rubbish or food scraps near sheds and bins.
- Don't take close-up photos or try to chase it away with a stick.
