Suspicious package or white powder: what to do? Biological threat

⏱ 2 min read
Letter with powder, strange parcel. Below: what to do right away, what next, when to call 112 and what to avoid. The same instructions are in the free SurvivalZone.app and work without internet.
First, right now
- Does a parcel look suspicious? Do not open it or move it. If you have not accepted it yet, do not take it from the courier.
- Has powder, liquid or gel spilled out? Do not touch, sniff, shake or clean it up. Put everything down, leave the room and close the door.
- Close the windows, switch off ventilation and air conditioning, wash your hands and face well with soap and water and call 112.
Then
- Suspicious signs: an unknown sender, stains, a smell, wires sticking out, too much tape, or labels such as “personal” or “confidential”.
- If an unopened parcel is already inside, put it in a thick bag, seal it, put it in a second bag, tie and seal it. Do not move it further.
- Keep everyone out of the room. Write down who touched the parcel.
- Take off any clothes that may have touched the powder, put them in a bag and shower.
- Wait for the emergency services and follow their instructions. A doctor will decide whether you need tests or medicine.
When to call 112
Always when you find a suspicious parcel or powder or liquid spills from it. Also if someone has breathing problems, a rash, fever or vomiting after touching it.
What not to do
- Do not shake, sniff or look inside the parcel.
- Do not vacuum or dry-sweep the powder.
- Do not take antibiotics on your own.
